introduction to Amaterasu
Who Is Amaterasu?
Amaterasu or Amaterasu Okami, is the Sun Goddess of Shinto. She is debatably the most important and honored Kami in Shinto. She is considered to be the sun and brings light and warmth. She is the Daughter of Izanagi and sister of two other major Kami. She was born out of Izanagi's left eye, and upon birth, she was given the role of ruling Takamagahara. When her Brother Susansoo eventually drove her into a cave, a shadow of darkness was cast over the entire world. All of the other Kami got together and tried to decide how to bring Amaterasu back out. So, the gathered many hens, a mirror and jewels. They hung the mirror and jewels on a tree outside of the cave she was in. Amennouzume danced on top of a tub making everyone laugh. Amaterasu didn't know how all could be merry when the sun was gone. She then decided to peek outside her cave, seeing the mirror and hearing all the hens, drawing her out. The Kami threw a special rope to prevent Amaterasu from reentering her cave. The sun was then brought out again. This myth has led to a many special rituals in honor of Amaterasu, which helps to strengthen the religion.
